Fostering the Growth of Renewable Energy - India Update
The Government of India hosted the Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC) 2010 recently on the theme of "Up-scaling and Mainstreaming Renewables for Energy Security, Climate Change and Economic Development". The show was the most significant event on renewable energy ever held in India, attracted more than 9,000 delegates and had more than 250 speakers and 600 exhibitors from 50 countries – including ministerial delegations from several countries.
Solar garnered the majority of interest due to the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission that is proving to be a catalyst for solar PV manufacturing and installations in India. The goal of the mission is to create 20GW of solar installations by 2022, utilitizing 4-5GW of local annual solar panel manufacturing. Under this plan, India’s Government has already received applications for 1,500 MW against a plan to allocate 150MW in the first year -- highlighting the strong interest from business groups.
Applied Materials participated in this show with a booth visited by all our key customers. Mr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Secretary of Commerce, USA and Dr. Bhargava, Director, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India were among the key visitors from the ministerial delegations. They were updated on the technology advances that will drive down the cost for solar PV and spur increased adoption.
Of high interest for the cell manufacturers was the Applied Baccini Esatto technology advances made on the Baccini metallization tool, with high accuracy upgrade to enable double printing and selective emitter. While there is a clear expansion plan for cells, there is also a growing interest in the wafer manufacturing and extending further into the value chain. This enabled us to have discussions about our offering from Precision Wafering systems.
Applied Materials’ commitment for the growth in India was received well. We appreciate all of our customers who stopped by our booth and made this show such a success. We look forward to supporting them in their plans.
