Building on 20 Years of Success
Over the past 20 years, Applied Materials employees have packed an impressive 78,000 boxes with more than 25 million pounds of food to help alleviate hunger in Silicon Valley.
On a Saturday morning in 1995, a crew of Applied Materials employees and their families gathered to help pack boxes of food for distribution to those in need by Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. The event, which came to be known as Helping Hands Day, is a proud Applied tradition that has continued (and grown) over the past 20 years.
This year, a record 6,010 boxes of food were packed in less than two hours by 312 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers – some of whom have participated for all 20 years. Organizers estimate that during the past two decades Applied volunteers have packaged 78,000 boxes with more than 25 million pounds of food to help alleviate hunger in Silicon Valley.
Over the years, Helping Hands Day has grown to meet the increasing demand – both from those who are hungry and from employees who are dedicated to helping address the issue of food scarcity in the Bay Area.
Accolades to our employee volunteers for their history of making a positive contribution in the local community. And, thanks to the Food Bank for providing us with the opportunity to serve. Happy Holidays!
