Back to School

What would a classroom full of eager, young learners be without an equally excited teacher, ready to kick off the new school year? Unfortunately, both the U.S. and Taiwan are facing a shortage of teachers. With support from Applied Materials, Teach for America and Teach for Taiwan are working to ensure all students, regardless of background or income level, are learning from a quality teacher.

Teach for America (TFA) and Teach for Taiwan both follow the same model – recruiting and training promising young leaders as teachers, who then commit to teaching in high-need communities for a two-year period. Through the program, students gain new role models and young professionals are introduced to the education sector.

While these teachers may be new to the field, they are creating positive change, both in classrooms where they work and within themselves. A 2015 evaluation conducted by Mathematica Policy Research found that students of TFA teachers learned at least as much reading and math as their peers taught by non-TFA teachers. And, while not all young professionals stay on as teachers after their two-year commitment concludes, a 2015 study of TFA alumni found that participating in TFA increases racial tolerance and makes them more likely to work in education.

In the coming school year, funds from Applied and its Foundation will support Teach for America Phoenix activities in Maricopa County, Teach for America Bay Area’s teacher placements in East San Jose, and Teach for Taiwan’s work throughout the country.

Thank you to all of the new and veteran teachers working tirelessly to provide high-quality education to our youth. We hope everyone has a great start to the new school year!
