Applied Materials Supports IIT Bombay and the National Center for PV Research and Education
Recognizing the need for research and development as well as education and training for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in India to be successful, the ministry of New and Renewable Energy created the "National Center for Photovoltaic (PV) Research and Education" (NCPRE) at the IIT Bombay campus.
Professor Devang V. Khakhar, Director at IIT Bombay formed an advisory committee comprising of eminent members from both academia and industry, to oversee the center’s direction. Dr. Madhusudan Atre, president of Applied Materials in India was recently appointed as a member of this prestigious committee.
The committee advises the institute on the progress of the NCPRE, alignment of the center’s goals to the national goals and international trends, and on the adoption of best practices. Dr. Atre commenting on this development said "It is a privilege to be a member of this advisory committee which has the responsibility of guiding the country's solar mission, as well as the growth of technology, talent, and ecosystem."
NCPRE is a highly inter-disciplinary platform, drawing upon the expertise of 50 faculty members, students and research assistants, from 13 departments at IIT Bombay.
Besides conducting courses and programs at IIT Bombay at the bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. levels, NCPRE will interact with other educational institutions across the country to develop and disseminate course modules on PV. More importantly NCPRE will also have strong ties with industry in India, in order to ensure that R&D activities of the center are well aligned to the industry’s requirements to meet the JNNSM goals.
