Applied Materials Awarded Sustainable Technologies Award

Achieving sustainable manufacturing is a critical goal for leading technology companies driven by growing concerns about the environmental impact of their businesses and by increasingly stringent government regulations and reporting requirements. Product sustainability extends not only to their operations, but also to the products that they manufacture.

At Applied Materials we design our products with the environment in mind. Our goal is to make our products at least 20% more energy efficient and environmentally friendly by 2010 and we’re making great progress.

Applied Materials was awarded the SEMICON West 2010 Sustainable Technologies Award for its contribution to sustainable improvement of the environment by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chains for the microelectronic, display and photovoltaic industries.

We received this award in recognition of Applied’s iSYS product, the industry’s first fully integrated subfab solution for controlling emissions in the semiconductor fab. The iSYS platform is highly compact and energy-efficient, with innovative design features including a unique control system that is synchronized with the wafer processing tool. iSYS makes automatic real-time adjustments in resource consumption depending on changing tool conditions. The iSYS tool enables customers to reduce the energy required to power various Applied manufacturing systems by approximately 20%. Considering that most fabs utilize many of these process tools, the potential cumulative savings are pretty significant.

The Applied iSYS platform, with its innovative, open architecture is a great example of how Applied Materials can provide manufacturers with a quick and flexible way to achieve both substantial environmental benefits and more cost-effective operations.
