Applied Materials Accelerates Expansion of Educational Opportunity
At the core of Applied Materials’ corporate responsibility commitment is a focus on improving the way people live and helping to create a bright future in the communities in which we operate. After spending time at the November 'Teach For All' investors conference in London, it is clear that Teach For All together with their local organizations in Israel, United Kingdom (UK), and Germany share the Company’s belief that education is key to improving the way people live.
The organization aims to recruit outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teaching for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity for underserved communities.
Applied Materials is already a supporter of Teach For America in the United States, in both San Jose, California and Phoenix, Arizona. Teach For All was incubated by Teach For America as a new, separate organization – in partnership with Teach First — an adaptation of Teach For America in the UK. Teach for All's goal is to support initiatives that are already under way in places like India, Israel, and Germany.
Applied Materials helped launch Teach First Deutschland in Germany last summer as well as expand Teach For All’s reach across the European region. Additionally, Applied is exploring future engagement opportunities in Europe and Israel.
At the conference, I had the opportunity to meet inspiring, young social entrepreneurs from all over the world responsible for building local organizations. I was also able to visit a school where Teach First UK teachers were engaging their students through creative and dynamic lessons. I gained firsthand experience of the programs sucess while visiting a math class and speaking to a group of young school girls. I was amazed to see that even for those who struggled with the subject - there was not a boring moment!
Since the visit, I am convinced that the teaching fellows are positively impacting students’ lives while at the same time, positively influencing the teaching style of the schools they work for – by bringing in their freshness, high motivation and creativity.
Leaving the conference, I couldn’t help but feel excited about Applied Materials’ contribution to accelerating regional expansion of this educational opportunity.
The Teach For All network now includes organizations in 18 countries and expects to grow into 50 countries by 2014.
