One of the many highlights of working at Applied Materials is collaborating with extremely innovative, talented and passionate people who are changing the world as we know it. One in particular is our very own Dr. Charlie Gay – also known as “Doctor Solar.”
I’m delighted to congratulate Charlie on his election to the National Academy of Engineering – the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer in the United States – for his seminal contributions to the development of the global solar photovoltaic (PV) industry.
Charlie is president of Applied’s Solar division and an Applied Materials Fellow. He is a well-respected, veteran who has lived, breathed and passionately championed the solar industry for more than 35 years. Dedicated to making solar photovoltaics a meaningful part of the world’s clean energy supply by making the technology scalable and low cost, Charlie’s involvement over the years has made a significant impact.
His contributions, which span solar photovoltaic technology, manufacturing and deployment, and overall ecosystem development have helped the global solar PV market become a $50 billion industry and enabled the cost-per-watt of solar electricity to come down by a factor of 50 since 1978. More than 85% of all solar panels manufactured in the last three decades have been made using the groundbreaking metallization and packaging technology solutions developed by Charlie and his teams.
As founder of the Greenstar Foundation, he has worked continuously to apply solar technology to improve people's lives by delivering solar power to villages in developing countries.
As Applied celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, I can’t help but reflect on the many contributions each employee has made to get us where we are today— one of the world’s leading supplier of equipment and services to the semiconductor, display and solar industries.
I’m inspired every day witnessing the talent and capabilities available at Applied – world-class scientists and engineers with a focused eye for innovation. It is our talented people that have been instrumental in creating the products that our customers need to be successful, and in turn, that are changing how people work, play and communicate.
