Celebrating the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards

Apr202016

Do you remember the first time you learned where food came from? That enlightened moment where you realized that, in fact, vegetables don’t just appear on grocery store shelves, but that someone, somewhere, had dedicated time and energy to plant, water and harvest that ear of corn that now sat so unassumingly on your plate?

This Earth Day, we are reminded of the role we each play in protecting our natural habitat. At Applied Materials, employees are celebrating Earth Day with the launch of Earthworks, a program that facilitates employee action to build a more sustainable future. In addition to engaging our employees, we know it is crucial to provide similar opportunities to young people.

I am pleased to highlight Applied’s commitment to hands-on environmental education programs for youth around the world. We believe that through a greater understanding and appreciation for nature, today’s youth will grow into tomorrow’s stewards of the Earth.

In 2015, Applied Materials and its Foundation collaborated with nonprofit organizations from California to China, supporting more than 30 projects. As a result, students in Kalispell, Montana participated in Glacier Institute's Discovery School, studying aquatic ecology, wildlife and forestry in the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park; youth in Austin, Texas, worked with Colorado River Watch Foundation to collect, analyze and publish water quality data from local rivers and streams; students in Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou, Wuxi and Xi’an, China participated in eco action projects at schools with The Jane Goodall Institute – Shanghai; and in Israel, youth planted and harvested an organic vegetable garden at Moatza le Shimur Atarim.

For many, these programs offer the first opportunity to see a live banana slug or dip their toes in a rushing river. Such introductions to nature can be transformative, instilling new, insightful perceptions of our collective responsibility to preserve the Earth for future generations.

At Applied, we are pleased to celebrate Earth Day by continuing our longtime dedication to the environment, through employee engagement programs and strategic community investments.
