One of the biggest challenges for a country like India with over a billion people is employment generation. Especially for youth from underprivileged communities who lack basic education. The percentage of unqualified and unemployed youth from poor families residing in slums and in villages in India is fairly high. They lack exposure and skills that are required to be employed.

The Applied Materials Foundation has partnered with United Way of Bengaluru and its local partner Unnati to train with marketable skills and provide entry level jobs to youth in India. The objective is to encourage them to join the workforce and become productive citizens of the country.

Through the support of the Applied Materials Foundation, 125 underprivileged youth received vocational training. After completion of the three month training, these youngsters will have a chance at a meaningful livelihood with a brighter future.

The training included life skills, spoken English, computers, values and communication skills in addition to the core vocation chosen by each individual. The vocational training assured a job at the end of the training.

With this partnership, the Applied Materials Foundation has helped bridge the skills gap in the market place, and has empowered and enabled many of India’s most underprivileged youth.
