Employees Celebrate Earth Day Around the World

May242017

Why is it important to recycle? Or plant trees? How does Applied Materials work to preserve the environment in communities where employees work and live? How can my family get engaged in environmental activities?

Answers to these questions and more were revealed during Applied’s annual EarthWorks campaign, a global effort to build knowledge about environmental sustainability and inspire action. Throughout April and May, employees all over the world were encouraged to learn about the environmental movement, take action and engage in their local communities and give to organizations making a positive impact on the environment.

From planting trees in California, Singapore and Taiwan, to harvesting vegetables for Passover in Israel, building green houses and recycling e-waste in Texas, and cleaning up Mount Fuji in Japan and Qinling Mountain in China, employees spent time celebrating the environment and living our core value of Responsibility and Integrity.

In Israel, nearly 400 employees volunteered to harvest 20 tons of vegetables for distribution to vulnerable families throughout the country for Passover.
In Austin, TX and Kalispell, MT employees donated to electronics recycling drives and built green houses with Habitat for Humanity.
In Japan, volunteers collected over 900 pounds of garbage during a Mt. Fuji cleanup!
Employees in Santa Clara, CA volunteered at a community farm that provides food education and affordable, locally grown produce to low income families.
In addition to group events and volunteer activities, EarthWorks also promoted opportunities for individuals to steward the earth on a daily basis – employees in both Austin and Santa Clara participated in “Bike to Work” days, encouraging folks to leave their cars at home and bike to the office. Other ‘everyday’ green options were promoted as well, including the use of reusable water bottles, coffee mugs and shopping bags.

We’re proud of our employees for investing their time, sweat and funds into making our world a better place and demonstrating Applied’s commitment to the environment.
